Kingdom bold as brass

COWDENBEATH based, Kingdom Brass, were celebrating success at the Scottish Festival of Brass band music last weekend, as four ensembles from the organisation performed in Perth's Concert Hall.
At the main event on the Saturday, the Scottish Open Brass Band Championships, Kingdom's senior band finished the day with a very creditable sixth place in a field of sixteen Championship Section bands from Scotland, England and Wales.
Performing the testpiece, Philip Sparke's "Music for Battle Creek", Kingdom were unfortunate to draw to play number one on the day, so faced an uphill struggle to feature in the prizelist.
Despite that, the Fife Champions put in scintillating display to claim a top six finish at one of the UK's major events, rounding off a year which has seen them lift three titles in Scotland.
Before the results were announced on the Saturday evening, the young players from the Kingdom Percussion Academy had the honour of being invited to provide the entertainment to the waiting audience.
Under the leadership of Head Percussion Tutor, Lynsey Paterson, the dozen young Kingdom players showed off their talents on various percussion instruments, with a fantastic finale featuring music from "The Lion King", along with video backing which was very impressive in the Concert Hall.
On the Sunday attention turned to the Scottish Youth Championships. The youth development programme at Kingdom Brass is constantly growing, and this year two bands performed, in the '12 and under' and '14 and under' age groups.
Under new Head Tutor Kenneth Blackwood, both bands performed a varied programme to a large audience in the Concert Hall, and were rewarded with silver awards in both sections.
Kingdom Brass are now preparing for their annual Christmas Concert, in the Co-op Hall, Cowdenbeath, on Thursday December 22nd, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £6 and £3.
