Kelty Hearts on the attack against Whitburn.

KELTY Hearts made the last 16 of the Scottish Emirates Junior Cup with a convincing win over Whitburn on Saturday.

In the other local games that beat the cold weather, Dundonald Bluebell edged the Central League derby against Lochore Welfare and Lochgelly Albert won a ten goal thriller.

Kelty Hearts 4, Whitburn 2.

HEARTS produced some good attacking play to clinch their place in the fifth round of the Emirates Cup.

Kelty gave the West Lothian side a real going over in the first-half but strangely only led by the odd goal in three at the interval.

The opener came in 17 minutes when Roger Duffin did the spadework for Greig Meikle to fire home and then in 24 minutes they went two ahead.

Nelly McCabe sent Meikle free and his shot came back off the 'keeper to Conrad Courts who shot home from 12 yards out. Hearts continued to attack and they could have had a third but in a rare Whitburn raid they pulled one back with a bit of a freak goal.

From a corner the ball flew off Duffin and over 'keeper Allan Fleming's head.

But Whitburn's joy was relatively short lived as on the interval whistle a second yellow saw them reduced to ten men.

Whitburn started the second-half pretty steadily without creating any real chances and Kelty's response was a Robbie Henderson seven yard strike after a corner situation to make it 3-1.

As Hearts dominated Clark Kay saw the Whitburn 'keeper pull off a great save but there was nothing he could do to stop Meikle adding a fourth from close in.

Whitburn got one back late on but it was too little too late.

Kelty boss, Keith Burgess, was delighted to be in the hat for round five but felt his side could have played better.

"We came out of the traps fast and hit them with two quick goals but while we always dominated possession we could have done better in terms of goals," he said.

"We were a little careless at times and should have won by a wider margin but we are in the hat for round five which is the important thing."

Lochore Welfare 0, Dundonald Bluebell 2.

THIS keenly anticipated Central League derby match saw defences dominate for long spells.

Both teams had spells in charge of possession but the first real danger saw a goal for the visitors in 15 minutes.

Derek Wallace made a break from the half-way line and as he ran into the Lochore box he was tackled by Robert Fyfe and the ball rolled agonisingly into the net.

Welfare were still in the match and Lee Reid's 30 free-kick hit the bar and then Brett McGuire's header went just over.

The second period was equally as hard fought and Stewart Cargill missed a good chance for Bluebell on the hour when he fired over from an excellent position but at the other end Calum Young went close.

The key second goal came for Dundonald with two minutes left when Steven Forbes cut in and sent a 20 yard left foot shot into the net to complete a good day for the league leaders.

Lochgelly Albert 6, Steelend Victoria 4.

A TEN goal Central League thriller for the fans after this game was switched from Steelend to Gardiner's Park. With wind advantage Albert dominated the early stages and they went in front in eight minutes when Colin Jeffrey's shot was blocked and John McDiarmid raced in to head home.

Lochgelly strung together some good moves but they had to wait until the 44th minute for number two when Willie Telford's cross was headed in by Jeffrey.

A minute after the break McDiarmid and Telford set up Jeffrey for number three and soon after McDiarmid's pass allowed Jeffrey to complete his treble.

Steelend pulled one back on the hour and then scored from the spot after home 'keeper Colin Rushford fouled a forward in the box and the penalty was converted.

Albert needed a fifth and got it when Wayne Wright and Lee Celentano combined to give Stevie Brown the opening but a slack bit of defending let Vics in for a third goal.

Brown hit the sixth for Albert but late on Steelend made the final score 6-4.

Newburgh 3, Crossgates Primrose 0.

PRIMROSE went to Newburgh looking for three Central League points but they ended up on the wrong end of a beating.

Crossgates opened the game well enough but a 25 yarder put Burgh ahead and gave them confidence.

This saw Primrose start to struggle and a second goal for the home side soon after left the visitors chasing the game.

There were chances for Crossgates to get back into the picture but their finishing was poor and a third goal on the hour gave them too much to do.

SATURDAY's fixtures: East Super League, Kelty Hearts v Musselburgh Athletic, Hill of Beath Hawthorn v Camelon (1.45).

East Premier League, Ballingry Rovers v Newtongrange Star (1.45).

Central League, Lochgelly Albert v Jeanfield Swifts, Steelend Victoria v Crossgates Primrose, Dundonald Bluebell v Luncarty (1.45).
